Google+ Post Content: What Works And Why?

Why do Google+ Posts get +1's, Reshares and Comments? Why do some Posts get attention and others don't? A look at three popular Posts and some suggestions as to why each post works well.

NOTE: these are all my posts. (+Thomas Morffew)

Sometimes you post something and no-one cares. Sometimes you post something and it goes crazy with +1's, Reshares and Comments. Here's some thoughts as to why:

Post 1 - G+ Problem Solved v2

This was a popular post with a total of 1968 +1's, 1405 reshares and 205 Comments. This post works because it is:

a) Visual

b) Simple

c) It encourages agreement.

d) It's about Google+

This is a great example of a post that will usually attract a high number of +1's. The issue is one that many G+ users will recognize and understand. There's a high "me too" factor involved. Also never underestimate the power of a post about G+ on G+. Fish where the fish are.

Post 2 - Hotkeys for the Google+ Stream (excerpt from The Complete Google+ Cheatsheet)

Another popular post with a total of 1199 +1's, 1599 reshares and 131 Comments. This post works because it is:

a) Visual + Simple + about Google+

b) Useful

c) It encourages Reshares

Note the Reshares are higher on this one. It's a good example of a post that people would Reshare (because they want to pass on Useful Info.) Again notice it's Simple, Visual and about G+. Ticking all the boxes encourages reshares. Simple right?

Post 3 - Test Your Reaction Time

Link: https://plus.google.com/110352049954858592591/posts/fxSW8PHYF8k

Finally here's a post that encourages Comments + Reshares. It has 385 +1's, 540 reshares and 225 comments. This post works because it is:

a) Simple + Visual

b) Fun

c) Challenging (can you beat the score?)

The majority of the comments are people posting their score. Several people return later to post higher scores. This post also encourages reshares as people look to challenge their friends/Circles.

Hopefully this gives you some ideas for your own posts. Key takeaway is that posts with simple, visual, relevant and easily reshareable content will do well.

To maximise the potential of your posts, you can also use tools like Ripples to research influencers and sites like Circlecount to find out optimal posting times.

Good luck!
